Difference between KPIs and Metrics

KPIs and metrics are sometimes considered as the same thing however they are not. KPI stands for key performance indicator and they are a the most important metrics of performance.

KPI’s measure performance or progress based on specific business goals and objectives. The important keyword is “Key”, meaning they only track what is truly relevant for the companies stategic decisions.

Metrics are quantitative measurements used to track the performance of specific business processes at an operational and tactical level. They help provide context to the performance of the key business goals but are not critical to it’s success like KPI’s are.
